Obituary
Obituary of Jean Hardy Ryfkogel
Please share a memory of Jean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jean Arlean Hardy, the beloved daughter of Matthew Hardy and Vivian Arnetha Hardy (Taylor), was born in Richmond, Virginia. She was raised in Richmond and Cumberland, VA. After high school, she attended one year at Morgan State University. She later moved to "The Big Apple" (NYC). While there, she married and gave birth to Christy and Wayne (AKA "Eric"). She held various positions working at hospitals, the post office and the phone company.
Jean and the children migrated to Washington, DC in 1972, and shortly thereafter, Maryland became home for her until 2006. It was during this time that she affectionately became known as "Mama Jean" to many. There was nothing that she wouldn't do for you if it was within her power. Her home was lightheartedly known as "Ryfkogel Inn" because she opened her heart and home to many friends, family and coworkers in need of a place to stay.
After moving to DC, she landed a job and a 34-year career at Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). Her career started as a Technical Typist and ended as an Executive Assistant and Supervisor of administrative staff. In February 2008, she said goodbye to CSC.
In anticipation of retirement, she relocated to Delaware in 2006, and resided there until her departure. Mingling with new neighbors/friends, serving in her new church home and traveling replaced going to a "J-O-B!"
"Mama Jean" was a most passionate mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She truly was the gift that keeps on giving. Loyal, sacrificial to the hilt, encouraging, compassionate, helpful, full of knowledge and wisdom, caring, lively, forgiving, friendly, one to cheer you on, funny, and chatty are only a few of the attributes that impacted those who knew her and will miss her. Her eternal legacy is that of believing on and walking with the Lord Jesus Christ!
Those left to cherish fond memories include Pat Hardy, sister; Kevin & Christy Washington, daughter & son-in-law; W. Eric Evans, son; DeSean Hardy, Demir Hardy & Tyquan Hardy, nephews; Jordan & Candice Anderson, granddaughter & spouse; Karsten Washington, grandson; Krestin Washington, grandson; Joseph Washington, great grandson; and a host of very special friends and relatives.
