Obituary of Mary Victoria Matthews Morton

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Vicky was born on August 1, 1954, to James William Edward Matthews and Lucille Elizabeth Parker Matthews. She accepted Christ at a young age and started her Christian walk by joining Bethlehem Baptist Church in Cumberland, Virginia. She married her beloved husband of 47 years, Danny Morton, on May 30, 1975. To this union were two children, DeKeace Simone Morton and LoDonus Lavell Morton, Sr. Vicky's professional career included many years at the Virginia Department of Corrections, working as the dietician for residents of the Powhatan, Buckingham, Deep Meadows locations before becoming disabled. After moving to Farmville, Vicky joined Mercy Seat Baptist Church. At Mercy Seat, she was committed to its members and constituents by serving as the Sunday School Superintendent. She served on the Sr. Choir and on the combined choir and as a missionary. Vicky loved to cook and used her skills to prepare meals for visiting ministers, the elderly, and for special occasions. She served at the Mercy Seat food bank, expanding the spirit of giving to the community beyond the walls of the church. Vicky was a member of several local organizations including the Order of the Eastern Star (Farmville 153) and a daughter of the Prince Edward Elks Lodge #269. Vicky served as a volunteer for the Democratic Party, and for many years served as the Democratic Precinct Chair of the Hampden District and as Chair of the Democratic Campaign Committee. She volunteered at the polls each year to further the democratic process. Her participation included preparing meals for Governor Tim Kaine when he was a candidate for Vice President, and for former Governor Terry McAuliffe. Vicky extended her hands of service to volunteer at the Pine Grove School, assisting with the restoration efforts. She enjoyed fishing and gardening, frequently sharing extras with relatives and friends. Her family was always welcomed in her home where a comforting meal was sure to be part of the visit. While we were not quite ready to see her go, God in his infinite wisdom called his beloved child, Mary Victoria Matthews Morton, home to rest on January 6, 2023. Vicky was preceded in death by her father and mother, and her brothers, Charlie Samuel Parker, and Calvin Barry Matthews. With a genuine interest in all that we do, someone who guides and inspires. A mother's heart is so full of compassion, so generous, kind, and forgiving. A mother's smile is so loving and tender and adds so much gladness to living. A mother is someone with infinite patience. She soothes all our troubles away. Someone with limitless faith in her children, and love for them day after day. A mother is full of true wisdom and strength, of loveliness, insight, and grace. She's someone whose love will be cherished forever. For no one can quite take her place. Your children, DeKeace and LoDonus Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds God Saw You God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be. So, he put his arms around you, And whispered, "Come to me". With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Acknowledgement The family acknowledges, with deep appreciation, the many acts of kindness during this time including phone calls, cards and letters, food and of course, your presence here today. We thank you so much for whatever part you have played, whether words of comfort or acts of service. May you be blessed today and always. - The Family
