Sceamer Gertrude Fleming West Rose, daughter of the late Mabel Whitlow and Clifford O. Fleming, was born on September 16, 1926 in Metuchen, New Jersey. She departed this life to be with the Lord, on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at her home.
She was baptized in 1938 and joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She attended Cumberland Training School and graduated June 6, 1944 as class salutatorian. Sceamer was joined in wedlock to Eddie West Sr. From this union. 6 children were born: Eddie Jr., Vera, Alice. Shirley, Ann. and Cordell.
She provided a loving, disciplined home for her children. As they grew UP. she continued to help rear her grandchildren and extended family members. Affectionally, known as "Mom", "Grandma" or "Grandma Rose," she continuously lived an unselfish life, showing love to many and being a blessing to others in every way she could. Her strength came from reading the bible and studying her faith magazine daily. Her favored scripture was Psalm 23, which she often recited. She was a strong, determined woman and the backbone of her family. All through the years, with a voice of determination to provide for her children, she would often speak these words of hope, "Just as soon as I can spell A-B-L-E"_
As an avid gardener. she took pleasure in picking and canning vegetables to share with family and friends, She loved to watch daytime soap operas and game shows. Although she loved to travel, returning back home was always in the forefront of her mind. Some of her passions were caring for her houseplants, putting together jigsaw puzzles or working in a word search book Her greatest joy however, no matter how she felt, was bobbing her head and tapping her foot to the jazz music of 'B. B. King.
Early in life, she supported her family as a domestic worker and as a Nurse Practitioner with the Home Health Care Center. For a season, she worked as a Cumberland County Teacher's Aide doing various jobs and was known as the "ice cream lady." During the 70's, she was employed as a Food Service Supervisor, at the Correctional Center, until retirement in 1985.
For 20 years, she served as Church Clerk at Mount Olive Baptist Church. She was the President and Vice President of the Senior Missionary, a co-founder of the Men and Women's Day, a member of the Senior Choir, and the Custodian of the church.
