Obituary
Obituary of James Moultrie
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mr. James Moultrie, son of the late Alfred and Florie Mae Moultrie, was born July 13, 1938 in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
He departed this life to go home to rest eternally in peace with our Lord and Savior on the afternoon of Friday, October 22, 2021 in the comfort of his home.
During his childhood years, James was sent to be reared by his grandparents in Lakeland, Florida. He attended Rochelle Elementary, Rochelle Junior High and eventually Rochelle Senior High where he went on to represent his graduating class as valedictorian in 1958. Shortly after graduating, James was accepted by Florida A&M University on a full marching band scholarship.
After a very brief stint at Florida A&M University, James decided to enlist in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Fifth Army Band as a trombone musician while stationed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. While enlisted, he was awarded a good conduct medal and marksman badge.
In 1959, James was transferred out of Fort Sheridan and attended The United States Naval School of Music. A few years later, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.
In 1965, James decided that his passion of artwork would not afford him the security of a retirement pension later in life and he joined the NYPD where he stayed for the next 21 years of his life.
While on the job as an officer for the NYPD, James met the love of his life, Marlene McClary, whom on October 23, 1971, he was united with in Holy Wedlock in New York City and to this blessed union two children were born.
Both he and Marlene continued to live in New York City, prior to relocating to Lakewood, New Jersey in the mid-1970s. In 1986, James retired from the NYPD and made plans to relocate to his dream state of Virginia.
Eventually in 2005 James' dream became a reality and he packed up his youngest son and wife and they left for Virginia, where he settled in the quiet village of Cartersville to live out the rest of his days in peace and tranquility.
James was an avid artist and loved spending quiet time drawing, painting, listening to classical music, playing the trombone, spending time with his family, traveling and watching movies, especially westerns. He was a cowboy at heart, loving and embracing every aspect of southwestern and Native American cultures.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories: his wife, Mrs. Marlene Moultrie of Cartersville, VA; two sons, Mr. Devin Moultrie of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Mr. Darien Moultrie of Cartersville, VA; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Cheryl Moultrie of Lancaster, PA; four sisters, Mrs. Marva Culver Hall of Philadelphia, PA, Ms. Kathy Culver of Philadelphia, PA, Ms. Janet Culver of Philadelphia, PA and Ms. Shirley Culver of Philadelphia, PA; one brother, Mr. Dwane Culver of La Crosse, VA; one brother-in law, Mr. David Hall; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends and neighbors. Happy trails to you Daddy... may the good Lord take a likin' to ya!!!
