Obituary of Edward Thomas Brooks, Sr.

Edward Thomas "Pee-wee" Brooks, Sr., son of the late David Brooks and Florence West Brooks, was born August 5, 1937 in Cumberland County, Virginia. At an early age, Edward was converted, baptized and joined the Rocky Mount Baptist Church. He attended Cumberland County Public Schools before moving to North Carolina and later New Jersey to pursue careers in the hospitality and dry cleaning fields. Upon his return to Cumberland County he utilized his skills to become a co-owner of a dry cleaning business and co-operator of a full service gas station. He also worked in road construction as a heavy equipment operator. Edward culminated his career and received honors for twenty-four years of dedicated service to the Cumberland County Public School Division as a custodian and bus driver. Edward enjoyed fishing, hunting and leisurely driving. He fostered numerous friendships within the community with his infectious and witty sayings. One of his favorites was "What you talkin bout." On Monday, February 12, 2018, he departed this life at his Cumberland residence. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Susie Thornton and one brother, Charlie West. He leaves many to cherish fond memories: three daughters, JoAnn Johnson, Geraldine Foust (Johnny) and Gwendolyn Jefferson (Roger); three sons, John Ingram, Edward Brooks, Jr. (LaTrell) and Kovalensky Brooks (Lisa); ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters, Otelia Crump and Emma Brooks; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to family, friends and all throughout the community who expressed heartfelt concerns and provided support for his safety and overall well- being.
