Obituary of John Wesley Langhorne

J ohn Wesley Langhorne, son of the late Edward and Annie Langhorne, was born on May 23, 1931 in Cumberland, Virginia where he also attended public school. A t an early age, John accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He was then baptized and joined Rocky Mount Baptist Church where he remained faithful and in attendance until his decline in health. O n May 16, 1953, he married the love of his life Elsie. Later they moved to Richmond, Virginia and on to Baltimore, Maryland to start a family. In this union, five children were born. I n the late 1960's he decided to make Cumberland, Virginia his home and to seek employment to provide for his family. He gained employment with Ellis Palmore Sawmill where he worked until retirement. A fter retiring, John became a part of the Marion Gray Thomas Funeral Home's family where he assisted at the burial grounds. J ohn was well known for making others laugh! It was his passion and desire to put a smile on everyone's face. He enjoyed fishing and hunting for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; one sister; one granddaughter, Latiera Charmise Langhorne; and his only son, Wayne Edwin Langhorne. J ohn leaves to cherish fond memories: his wife, Elsie Langhorne; four daughters, Brenda (William) Taylor, Teresa Clark, Cheryl (William) Rosser and Iris (Michael) Brown; a daughter-in-law, Maria Booker Langhorne; a loving pastor, Reverend Larry E. Smith, whom he loved as his son; ten grandchildren: Travis Brown Sr, whom he loved as his very own son, Kevan Taylor, Bryan Taylor, William Rosser III, Lakeita Clark, Christopher Rosser, Kayla Brown, Jonathan Langhorne, Alex Rosser and Landon Brown; five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one aunt Alma Brown; one uncle, Levi Langhorne; three sisters-in-law, Ada Langhorne, Juanita Langhorne and Catherine Langhorn; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends; one of which he treasured as a son, George Booker. J ohn was a devoted family man and will be missed by all who knew him. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
