Obituary of Lucille Peaks Taylor
Please share a memory of Lucille to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lucille P. Taylor was born on June 2, 1927 to the late Arthur and Senobia Peaks in Buckingham County, VA. At an early age she accepted Christ and was baptized and became a member of Baptist Union Baptist Church of Dillwyn, VA. As a member, she attended Sunday School and joined the choir in 1939. Lucille was a member of a youth group called the Baptist Union Chorus, which consisted of six members. At the age of 13 she began taking piano lessons. She attended the Deep Bottom Elementary School in Dillwyn, VA and furthered her education at the Buckingham Training School.
On June 3, 1950, she was united in marriage to Cornelius B. Taylor Jr. She joined Petersville Baptist Church of New Canton, VA under watch care. In 1951 she began singing in the Petersville Baptist Church Choir until her resignation in 1995. Even though she resigned from the choir, she still remained active in other areas of the church.
In 1965 she joined the traveling musical group called The Friendly Echos. The group sang at various programs in Buckingham, Cartersville, Cumberland, Farmville, Richmond, Maryland, and New Jersey. Her husband and five children were always there for support wherever she traveled. Shortly after the death of her husband in 1975, she returned to her home church at Baptist Union Baptist Church as a full time member. She continued to sing and travel with both the Petersville and Baptist Union Choirs.
In 2002 she celebrated 63 years of gospel singing with family and friends. In 2008, she moved to Richmond to live and be closer to her children. While in Richmond, she attended New Direction Evangelistic Church. She was considered one of the church mothers who was always ready to sing a song. When her health began to decline, she moved to Westminster Canterbury Health Care Center of Richmond.
Lucille loved to cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her loved ones; baking pies were her favorite. Her other hobbies included singing, fishing, gardening, and sewing (often created her own designs). During her years of employment, Lucille held various jobs that included working part time as a domestic helper and as a store clerk.
On September 14, 2016 at Westminster Canterbury Health Care Center of Richmond, God called his child Lucille home. She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Senobia, husband Cornelius, son Curtis, and siblings (John, Hewitt, Alfred, Annie Mae, Arthur, Ruth, Ulysses, and Raymond.) She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Phyllis, Clarence (Daphne), and Linda Taylor of Richmond, VA, and LaVerne (Bill) Allen of Charlottesville, VA; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Marcus, Eric B., William, Shonique, Dominique, Benjamin, Brittney, and Eric W.; ten great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; two brothers, Harold (Alice) Peaks, and Ralph (Audrey) Peaks; sisters-in-laws, Ann Peaks, Bernice Peaks, Catherine Woodson, and Jeanetta Booker; brother-in-law John Taylor; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives, friends and devoted friends, Mary Royall of Cumberland, VA, Deborah Taylor of Cartersville, VA, and Phyllis Hatcher of Richmond, VA. She had many "adopted" children in the form of her devoted caregivers at Westminster Canterbury. She will be missed by all.
