Obituary of Ernestine Vassar Taylor

Ernestine "Vassar" Taylor, daughter of the late Ernest B. and Addie V. Green was born on February 27, 1934 in Powhatan, Virginia. She entered eternal rest Thursday, July 21, 2016 in Chesterfield, Virginia. At an early age, Vassar accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Pine Hill Baptist Church where she remained an active and dedicated member until her health began to fail. She served as a Sunday School teacher and was the musician for the choir for over fifty years. Vassar was instrumental in planning and implementing the annual church Homecoming/Revival services. She also chaired several special committees. Vassar graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1952 with honors. She accepted a position as dietitian at Richmond Memorial Hospital and retired after thirty-two years of service. Vassar took formal piano lessons for only four months in high school. She then purchased a home-study piano course and taught herself to play the piano which enabled her to become an accomplished pianist. Vassar was a loving mother to her three sons: Duvall, Gonzolus, and Barlow and a doting grandmother to her grandchildren: Jennifer and Garrett. She took care of Jennifer and Garrett from infancy until they outgrew the need for a sitter. Vassar enjoyed cruises and visited places such as Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Haiti, and Jamaica. She also enjoyed playing the piano and working puzzles (jig-saw, word find, crossword, etc.), and especially spending time with her family. Vassar leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Duvall Taylor (Wilhelmenia), Gonzolus Taylor (Carolyn), and Barlow Taylor; her grandchildren, Jennifer Taylor and Garrett Taylor; her sister, Julia Churchill (Ralph); her sisters-in-law, Barbara Green and Helen Morris; her brother-in law, James Taylor and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
