Obituary of Thelma Marie Hobson
Please share a memory of Thelma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
When Thelma graduated from Pocahontas High School she headed north to New Jersey where she spent a number of years before returning to her birthplace of Powhatan, where her life became full circle at Johnston Willis Hospital on Thursday, May 6, 2010.
Thelma was the tenth of twelve children, born on May 23, 1932 to Carl and Estelle Walton. After moving to New Jersey, she married a fellow Powhatan native, Weldon Hobson, in November of 1958. A daughter, Lydia Ali, is the only child born of this union. Thelma spent her last years living in the home of her daughter and son-in-law who had moved to Powhatan from New Jersey.
Thelma was a person who loved life and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed being in environments where there was lively activity. Her favor pastime was "BINGO", and she traveled all over to play at her favorite spots. Thelma made it her business to take care of everyone who crossed her path. She fed and clothed those in need and did whatever she felt she could do to help someone. While living in New Jersey, she joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church. When she returned to Powhatan she reestablished her membership at Greenbrier Baptist Church, where she received her faith and religious training.
Her loss will be shared by many family members and close friends. Besides her beloved daughter Lydia Ali (Qasim), she leaves to celebrate her life: her former husband, Weldon Hobson, four grandchildren, Na-im, Hasan, Hakeem, Hadiyah, four sisters: Amy Taylor, Ruth Brown, Fannie Brown and Christine Mitchell; one brother Carl Walton, Jr.; one sister-in-law, Shirley Walton, one brother-in-law, Freddie Taylor, numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. Thelma was loved by many and had a host of nieces and nephews whom she considered her sons and daughters, and in turn they also fondly considered her to be their mother.
Thelma will be greatly missed by all!
