Obituary of Linwood Thomas Miles, Sr.

Linwood was born July 11, 1924 in Powhatan to the late William Andrew Miles and Mary Paige Townes Miles. He attended school in Powhatan. He left high school in 1943 to join the Army. Upon receiving a honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to school to graduate. After graduating, he attended 3 years of trade school. He farmed with his brothers for many years and after that he worked various jobs until retirement. His true profession was farming. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening and baseball (watching on television and as a pitcher in a local league). He joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church at an early age, where he later served as a Deacon and member of the Adult Choir and the James E. Robinson Men Memorial Choir. He loved his church family and Mt. Zion, where he attended faithfully until his health failed. On July 2, 1947 he married Catherine, daughter of John and Mary Kenny Sims. They were married for 56 years before her death on August 4, 2003. Linwood was an inspiration to all who know him. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. He faced life and illness with courage. He prayed and thanked God daily for his hope and strength. His death leaves such a void, but we know in our hearts that, " Earth Has No Sorrow That Heaven Cannot Heal". On Sunday, April 11, 2010, Linwood Thomas Miles, Sr. gave up his courageous fight with prostate cancer and went home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sister; Lena Miles Morris, and brothers; Arthur, William, Earnest, Wilson, and Floyd Miles. He leaves to cherish his memory: three daughters, Louise Williams (Lenwood), Bernice Miles, and Gloria Nash (Gerald); one son, Linwood T. Miles, Jr.; one sister, Mary Miles Jones; one brother, Andrew A. Miles; one aunt, Rosetta Johnson; sisters-in-law, Alice Sims, Lucy Turner, and Margaret Young (Henry), and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is also survived by the love of his life and his constant companion, his granddaughter, Brianna Monic Nash.
