Obituary
Obituary of Susie Foster Brown
Please share a memory of Susie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Susie Foster Brown was born on November 3, 1924 in New Canton, Virginia in Buckingham County. She was the youngest girl of nine siblings born to John and Nicie Woodson-Foster.
Susie accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Petersville Church in Buckingham, Virginia. She attended Bon Brook School in Cumberland, Virginia and continued her academic quest and training when she moved at a very young age to Montclair, New Jersey.
In August of 1946, she married her lifetime partner, George Wanter Brown. To that union three children were born Earlene Barkley of Raleigh, North Carolina, Elsie Hansford (Clinton Hansford) of Hackettstown, New Jersey, and Elaine Brown of Budd Lake, New Jersey.
She was a supervisor at Medallion Inc. for many years. She returned to Virginia to care for her husband and honor his wishes when he became ill. Susie went back to New Jersey to be with her daughters once he passed.
On Saturday, April 4, 2015, Susie departed this life in New Jersey. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all of her siblings, one grandchild, Rachaun, one great-grandchild, and one great-great grandchild. Her sunset closed the curtain for the siblings; she was last one.
"Family" is the role that defined who she was and it could be seen in her dedication as a wife, a devoted mother, a beacon of light to a host of grandchildren, Carl Barkley (Brenda) of Raleigh, NC, Quan Alston of Paterson, NJ, Taris Barkley (Annette) of Rich Square, NC, Dathan Alston of Paterson, NJ, Janine Whitaker of Paterson, NJ, Shamon Cheek (Vernon) of Rocky Mount, NC, Marie Hansford of Paterson, NJ, Maelisha Hansford of Paterson, NJ, Clinton T Hansford (Terry) of Landing, NJ, Caleb Hansford of Hackettstown, NJ, and Joey Brown of Budd Lake, NJ; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, in-laws and those that became family just because she saw them that way (Denise Clyburn, Jenny Savage, Catherine Brown and their families only to name a few). She leaves one brother-in-law, Haywood Wimberly of Paterson, NJ and four sisters-in-law to cherish her memories, Lovelean Foster, Mary Davenport, Bettie Brown all of Cumberland, Virginia and Mildred Brown of Wayne, NJ.
God rewarded her in knowing the love of five generations. Their lives will be forever touched by her presence. If you knew her you would say "She was never short on words," "Meant what she said and said what she meant," and she had a quick wit that was hard to match. Susie Brown was not perfect -but she was real.
