Obituary of Willie Stillman Jones

On the morning of Sunday, January 5th, 2014, Willie Stillman Jones, age 83, entered into eternal rest at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Medical Center.
Stillman, the son of Mattie Jones, was born on February 9, 1930 in Powhatan, Virginia, where he grew up and received his education. He later moved to Riverhead, N.Y. and then later to Jersey City, N.J. During the Korean War he served his country courageously as a paratrooper in the United States Army, he received an Honorable Discharge. After the Korean War he again resided in Jersey City and was joined in wedlock to his late wife, Eula Jones.
Later in Jersey City, he was employed by A T & T Telephone Company, where he worked until he retired and moved back to Powhatan.
He faithfully served as a Mason for 57 years and advanced in all areas of the Masons. He served as Worshipful Leader of Friendship Lodge #44 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Brother Jones was also a Shriner.
When he returned to Powhatan, Virginia in the early 1990's, he became a member of the Mt. Pero Baptist Church. Stillman was always concerned about the well-being of his neighbors and willing to assist whenever he was needed. He was a kind and outspoken person, who was passionate about his beliefs.
He was preceded in death by his mother Mattie Jones; aunt, Ella Fox and uncle, Thomas Jones. He was also preceded by two sisters: Ethel Broadus (of Chicago, Illinois) and Ester Winfree (of Riverhead, New York), first cousins Charles Fox, Joanna Robinson, Beatrice Fox, Mary-Katherine Crute and Reverend Thelma Oliver.
He is survived by niece, Josephine Johnson, her sons, Boris, Percy, Romeo and Maurice; nephew, Richard Winfree (of New Jersey); great nieces, Lolita Winfree (of New Jersey) and Kelli Branch (of Newport News, Virginia); first cousins, Evalena Fox and Bessie Capers (of Jamaica, New York), Hester Myers (of Brooklyn, New York), Ella Fox (of Newark, New Jersey) and John Henry Fox (of Chesapeake, Virginia). Stillman is survived by a long time devoted friend, Deborah Wilson (of Lawrenceville, Virginia). Additionally, surviving him are a host of other family and friends. Stillman will be forever cherished by his relatives and dear friends. May You Rest In Peace, Stillman!
