Mary Elizabeth Wallace Mayo was born on July 5, 1927, in Beauford, North Carolina to the late Mary E. Williams-Wallace and Jesse Wallace, Sr.
Mary was educated at the Memorial Industrial School System in North Carolina.
Mary accepted Christ as her person Savior at an early age when she attended the Memorial Industrial Church School.
As a young adult, Mary relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she was a life long resident. In 'Philadelphia, Mary attended and graduated from Apex School of Beauty Culture in 1955.
In 1948, Mary met her life long partner, Robert Lindsey "Bob" Mayo. After six years of courtship they were united in holy matrimony on his birthday, January 7, 1954.
To this union one daughter was born. Her husband preceded her in death on February 12, 2006. "Liz," as Mary was affectionately called, was a loving and doting grandmother to her only grandchild.
Mary joined Mount Hebron Baptist Church many years ago and was a faithful member until her health began to fail. Mary loved her church and was very active in it.
She was a member of the Hospitality Committee, The Pulpit Circle, Missionary Society, Women's Day Committee and Youth Ministry. She was head cook for the church and served as the church's custodian for many years. She loved helping out and was very dedicated, receiving many certificates and acknowledgements from Mount Hebron for her faithful service.
Mary was employed by Philadelphia General Hospital for over thirty years in the surgery ward as a hospital aid. She retired from Philadelphia International Airport many years ago. Liz had many friends in her life; one devoted friend, James Fantom, acted as a caregiver.
After a long illness, Mary departed this life to be with the Lord at her home on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.
She leaves to mourn: her daughter, Brenda E. Mayo-Coleman; her grandson and devoted caretaker, Earl C.L. Davis IV; son-in-law, Ronald A. Coleman Sr.; one sister, Beullah Wallace of Winston Salem, North Carolina; two brothers, Jesse Wallace Jr.and Walter P. Wallace, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; three sisters-in-law, Louise Wallace and Linda Wallace, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Clara "Kitty" Logan of Washington, D.C. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousinsand other relatives and many friends.
