John McCullen Huckless, 78, living in Newport News died Tuesday, August 2, 2011.
He was born March 27, 1933, to the late Robert and Maggie Huckless in Columbia Virginia. John attended Cumberland County schools and graduated from Cumberland County High School in 1952. He married the lovely Mildred Ruth Ross from Powhatan Virginia on July 18, 1954. John and Mildred were married for 57 years.
John joined the United States Air Force in 1952. He had an illustrious career that spanned 26 years. He was highly decorated and served a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean War. During this time John, Mildred and the children traveled to many places both overseas and in the United States.
John was an extra-ordinary non-commissioned officer and earned the highest enlisted rank, Chief Master Sergeant. John retired from Griffiths Air Force Base in Rome New York on July 23, 1978. After retirement John retuned to school and obtained a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Suny College. The family moved to Newport News Virginia in 1984. John worked at NASA Langley for the next 10 years.
John loved gospel music and liked to fellowship with friends and family. He had a sharp mind and a highly regarded sense of responsibility. He also enjoyed watching sports and discussing important topics of the day. In his spare time, he researched and constructed a detailed family tree for relatives to view. John was a member of the Colossian Baptist Church located in Newport News Virginia.
John is survived by his wife Mildred and five children; John Jr., Debra A. Hall (Irvin), Michael, Teresa Cresic (Robert), Marc (Rachel); his twin brother James (Nancy), and his sister Ann Sinclair; and 7 grandchildren. He will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
